In a worrying story – far more of which is contained in what is not said – the UK division of Dell has pulled its entire range of Ubuntu PC’s from its website and is refusing to say when, or even if they might return.
Dell UK insist they are still offering the option to escape the Windows mind-meld, but you now have to call them direct and place your Ubuntu order that way.
“We’ve recently made an effort to simplify our offerings online by focusing on our most popular bundles, based on customer feedback,” A Dell-UK droid told PC Pro. “We’re also making some changes to our Ubuntu pages, and as a result they are currently available through phone-based sales only.”
It’s ironic to read such a statement from a firm which barely offered a choice. If they had the cajones to properly offer Ubuntu, then they might be believed. One weak netbook and one over-priced laptop do not make a range.
And there are two possible reasons for this indefensible insult:
1] Dell will claim they were not selling enough Ubuntu-loaded PC’s to be worth making the offer. This excuse can be shredded by the fact that no sane user would buy the underpowered, outmoded models they deigned to offer.
2] Microsoft saw the growing potential of Ubuntu [and Linux in general] to spoil their monopoly and either threatened Dell with cancellation of its place as an MS vendor, or offered indirect ”bribes’ if they came back to heel.
Whichever may be their true motivation – and I suspect both – this is another wound in Dell’s previously strong reputation, and – with the recent farce over faulty graphics cards – could see them relegated to the lower ranks of customer’s choices when they need a machine.
I used to be a disciple for Dell and recommended them highly to people for their reliability and value. I’m now in the market for a newer PC — and I’ll be buying HP.
I suspect many people will make the same choice, and Dell has no-one to blame but themselves. And Microsoft.

If you’re one of those rare and cerebral people who love knowledge and stories displayed on dead trees there is now a service that can help you indulge this rewarding addiction, without it devouring your home.
The problem with books is that once you’ve savored the story or digested the learning they can become clutter, and also need regular cleaning. For some, this is more trouble than they’re worth and a way of passing on the enjoyment is needed before you run out of patience – or room.
The dumpster has been the solution for many – and that’s almost barbaric. Now you can sell used books, get back most of your money – and still share one of the most rewarding addictions mankind’s ever known.
If you truly love books, you’re sure to love this – try that link and see how you feel…

If you have kids you know that the average pre-teen is never happier than when dressed like a vagrant, smothered in mud, and tromping it all through your house.
But sometimes life offers the chance to have them hosed down and confined in respectable clothes. Trying to persuade boys of that age to wear even vaguely hygienic attire is a challenge at best, but there are a few stores who can help.
You can find smart clothes for boys, kids ties of all shades, and all the trimmings you’ll need – Except, perhaps, for a muzzle.
If you have a young son and an event coming up, you need to plan way ahead. That link is a great source of ideas. After that I can just wish you luck.

Reports say Sony has plans to open an online store dedicated to classical music, and perhaps jazz.
ATD reports the store will offer high-fidelity, “loss-less” downloads in an environment similar to iTunes, and Sony will bring in the other big labels like Universal Music, EMI, Warner and others as well.
The best-known loss-less format is open source, so could this be FLAC’s big chance?

With the economy now at its weakest level of growth in six decades the importance of a strong education has been thrown into focus like never before.
Colleges are awash in applications from those whose parents are eager to strengthen their prospects of a stable career.
But despite so many bright teens now seeking admission, those in charge of acceptance are turning most down.
The University of Virginia, for example, had no less than 22,396 potential freshmen to choose from last year – the highest number since Thomas Jefferson welcomed its first students in 1825.
And UCLA is in the same class – Over 55,000 people applied in 2009, but less than 13,000 got in.
The key to success is to forge a strong grasp of the SAT test, which all colleges use to weed out the unworthy. And one way to shine in that test is to find sat prep courses.
A few easy classes online can help you or your child gain a strong eduction. And with that achieved, the future is yours to decide…

The desire to lose weight is a natural thing, but sadly most of the products that claim to help you are not.
Media reports of false claims, bad labeling and side effects that caused serious harm are too common to just buy pills on instinct. What we need is independent reviews and past buyer’s stories that will prove, once and for all which pills you should buy.
So if you’re in the market to find the best fat burner that won’t just burn a hole in your wallet, that link is one suggestion.
But do some online research and you’ll soon find the fakes…
