Sleeping like a log

Modern society needs to relax. People are so busy they don’t take time to appreciate what’s around them and what they have. Proof is seen in people’s colorless choices when they decorate their homes. Acres of plastic and vinyl that add no warmth or character. And character is not hard to do – bring in a few pieces of log bedroom furniture and a good night’s rest would be like snoozing in a forest…but without all the spiders.

The range is abundant, but how do we get people to slow down and care?…

In remberance of things past

The relentless advance of computers into every facet of life has caused the demise of a lot of time honored habits, and this has not been entirely welcome in some cases. The ability offered by email to contact people on the other side of the world in a matter of minutes is at the root of a huge drop in correspondence by paper.

For years, the use of personalized stationery was the mark of someone who truly cared about their interaction with others. Now such personal focus is almost unheard of.

It can’t be denied that computers have been an enormous benefit to us all, but it has to be faced – the side effects have been a sad part of this boon…

Could Symantec be fibbing??

On a similar theme to my last mention of the Redmond clan we now read of questionable tactics by one of their closest allies – Symantec, the makers of Norton Anti-Virus, which has become a widely unwelcome part of the Windows experience whether users want it or not.

According to one scribe at Forbes Magazine, a publication not exactly famous for scare stories or inadequate research, the gnomes at Symantec are now facing a class-action suit for [allegedly] using fake results and scary text in their software to compel users to pay for upgrades or renewals.

The lawsuit claims the company designed its programs to scan users machines and give doom-laden warnings of potential threats…even when nothing was found. In a statement a Symantec spokesman says the firm “does not believe the lawsuit has merit and will vigorously defend the case.”

If – and it’s not as bizarre an idea as it sounds – they lose it will be interesting to see MS’s response. Will they drop Norton and go with another vendor, or just leave users at the mercy of the technological Swiss Cheese that is ‘Windows Firewall’?

Stay tuned, kids – this could get good…

Forecast finer days

As it usually is, the weather in central California is already like Summer, but the forecast for the next few days is dismal; Cold, a good chance of showers and almost unbroken cloud.

You don’t realize how luck you are to live in this verdant part of the world until there’s a cold / rainy day to bring a chill of reality. Summer days with those long, lazy evenings and friends’ gold chains glinting in the bright morning sun seem so far off it’s depressing.

But Spring will come soon, then thoughts of rainy days will dissolve. And who’s not up for that?

How to do business like scared two-year olds

And so the story continues – After the news of Microsoft’s changes to the User Agreement for the X-Box which requires victims to agree not to sue them we now read how these impish oppressors want to make it impossible for people to load the OS of their choice on their own machine – unless M/S makes it.

Those who create the Redmond Virus have already been faced with a court case that cost them millions in fines and induced a deep public distrust of their products and methods yet the arrogance persists, apparently unchecked. If you need to lock other people’s machines from being able to use a product you don’t make and therefore don’t approve of you’re either scared of its effect on your oppressive monopoly, irreparably evil or dumber than dirt.

Here’s the article – You be the judge…

A simple mat can help lose weight

Christmas – or whatever festival you prefer to indulge – is a great time of year, but there are drawbacks. The cold nights and omnipresent food go together too well, and once Spring and the need for lighter clothing arrives a lot of people have a problem.

This is why you’ll see dozens of rather well-rounded folks heading for the gym every New Year’s with a yoga mat bag slung on one arm. Yoga’s great for the waistline and far less stress than trying to lose pounds by going jogging. If you’re hunting a way to burn off the cookies you should give it a try…
